Reading/Writing/Literacy

The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education’s (Penn GSE) M.S.Ed. program in Reading/Writing/Literacy (RWL) prepares students to rethink how literacy is taught, studied, and delivered in educational systems around the world.

Students in the interdisciplinary M.S.Ed. program in Reading/Writing/Literacy study literacy and language from sociopolitical, cultural, psychological, historical, and linguistic perspectives. The M.S.Ed. in RWL is inquiry-based, intended to raise questions about the relationships among theory, research, policy, and practice.

In addition to the coursework, M.S.Ed. students partake in fieldwork in settings such as the Weingarten Learning Resources Center; public, charter, and independent schools; community colleges; and community and social service agencies, providing RWL students with the opportunity to work with learners across generations and cultures.

Students can study full- or part-time and can opt to pursue a Reading Specialist Certification.
